Cognitive behavioural therapy

‘Watch your thoughts, they become your words;
watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions,
they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your
character; watch your character, for it becomes your destiny’

FAQs

  • Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a here-and-now approach to examining how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are connected and impact our overall well-being. CBT focuses on identifying thinking and behavioural patterns and implementing specific strategies to tackle how we feel. It is an ‘active’ form of therapy. The therapist will ask you to complete ‘out of session tasks’, ‘practice a skill’ or carry out an ‘experiment’ to test beliefs in or out of the session. CBT is problem-focused approach that helps to directly challenge various unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour. CBT is a time-limited form of therapy that is highly effective when there is a clear goal to focus the therapy on. Overall, the therapist’s aim is for the client to become their ‘own therapist’ so that they can draw on skills and knowledge after therapy has concluded.

  • Room for Two offers CBT and due to its strong evidence based approach, covers the treatment of various difficulties. Generally, in most services CBT is the first line treatment for both Anxiety and Depression. In addition, NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends CBT for Eating Disorders, OCD, postnatal depression, social anxiety, panic, managing long term illness and post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • CBT always works to an ‘end point’ ensuring the therapy is time limited. CBT can be a relatively brief form of therapy ranging from 6-30 sessions. At Room for Two we always say to our clients to initially work towards 6 sessions. We will review and then consider how many more following sessions will be required following this initial stage of therapy.
