Compassion focused therapy

‘Everyone benefits from you, apart from you’

FAQs

  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy which emphasizes the importance of applying compassion – for the self, for your loved ones, and for strangers – for living a healthy and happy life. The central therapeutic technique of CFT is compassionate mind training, which teaches the skills and attributes of compassion through self-soothing, mindfulness, imagery and letter writing. CFT evidence highlights how effective it can be with people who struggle withself- critical thoughts, rumination, high levels of shame and low self-esteem.

  • At Room for Two we would incorporate CFT into different anxiety disorders such as low self-esteem, social anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • At Room for Two we tend to incorporate CFT into our individual psychotherapy and like CBT would recommend six initial sessions, review and then consider how many you need following this initial stage of therapy. We tend to go up to around 12-20 sessions for ACT.
